The sage Patanjali is regarded as the father of Yoga in this world. On the basis of his practical knowledge he wrote a book on yoga known as the "yoga sutras". Patanjali pointed out eight limbs of Yoga Practice. These practices begin with yama, universal codes of conduct and niyama, individual disciplines. Next comes the practice of asana (yoga postures). After progress in the practice of yoga asanas, one undertakes the practice of the yogic breathing called pranayama. Pranayama strengthens and tones the nervous system and disciplines the mind, making it a fit tool for the practice of concentration and meditation, and a bridge to the soul.
